On a clear and crisp morning at Jerez, F1's 'young driver' formula one test kicked off.
With only rookies with less than three official F1 events under their belts eligible to drive, nine out of the ten teams that contested the 2009 world championship fielded single cars on the opening morning of the three-day session.
Toyota, having pulled out of formula one, are not present, but fellow withdrawing manufacturer BMW turned up at Jerez to honour its promise to Alexander Rossi and Esteban Gutierrez.
F2 driver Andy Soucek, wearing a specially liveried helmet in the blue and white colours of the team, was on the pace for Williams throughout Tuesday morning.
"I had forgotten just how fast these cars are," the 24-year-old Spaniard enthused.
Ferrari, whose mechanics gathered in pitlane with a 'Piccolo Felipe' (little Felipe) sign to welcome Felipe Massa's newborn son into the world, are running Jules Bianchi on Tuesday, while Belgian Bertrand Baguette rolled out of the Renault garage in the R29.
Antipodeans Daniel Ricciardo and Brendon Hartley had a difficult start to the day, both spinning in the same incident and needing to have their Adrian Newey-designed Red Bull and Toro Rosso cars returned to the pits on the backs of flat-bed trucks.
Force India's Tuesday runner is the American JR Hildebrand, McLaren's 28-year-old Gary Paffett is in action, and Indycar driver Mike Conway is driving the championship-winning Brawn.

Nick Heidfeld had an emotional last few laps with BMW-Sauber on Sunday, but a post-race gesture by the team's founder might have cheered him up.
The Hinwil based team's owner BMW now departs formula one, and although bought by the Qadbak consortium, Sauber does not have a guaranteed entry to return to the grid in 2010.
German Heidfeld raced for Sauber's privateer team in 2001-2003, before returning to the Swiss camp for the start of the BMW era four years ago.
"It now becomes very emotional," said Heidfeld, 32, after finishing fifth in Abu Dhabi. "During the last laps I had to pull myself together in order to keep my concentration."
The team signed off on Sunday night by revealing that Heidfeld is to receive a special parting gift.
"As a thank you for Nick Heidfeld's seven years of great commitment to the team in Hinwil, Peter Sauber is giving him a formula one car from this era," the team said.

Michael Schumacher has been tipped for a role at the FIA alongside his friend and former Ferrari boss Jean Todt.
Todt was on Friday elected to succeed Max Mosley as the Paris based Federation's new president, and seven time world champion Schumacher was present as the votes were counted in the French capital.
"He is like a son," Frenchman Todt, 63, was quoted as saying by the Scotsman newspaper. "There has always been a place for him next to me and there still will be."
And despite the bitter battle waged by Todt's opponent Ari Vatanen, outgoing president Max Mosley hinted that the 57-year-old Finn might also find a role at the FIA.

Donington's hopes of hosting the British grand prix appear all but over, after boss Simon Gillett missed yet another deadline to demonstrate his financial ability to refurbish the Leicestershire venue.
F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone has put in place a sequence of missed deadlines in recent weeks, the latest of which was late Friday, and his patience may now be at an end.
Britain's Daily Express and Times newspapers, as well as the PA news agency, all report that Donington's absolutely last chance is now Monday, with traditional Silverstone to thereafter get the green light to prepare for next July's race.
"It's not good, is it?" Ecclestone told The Times.
"Even if they get the money, I cannot see how it will all be ready in time to go. It is very disappointing because we thought it would happen, but they cannot go on missing deadlines.
"They could still come to us saying they have the money, but there is no way the circuit would be ready at this late stage. It looks as though we will have to start planning again," said the Briton.
PA quoted Ecclestone as saying: "The deadline is this weekend, and we will see what happens on Monday."
